VICTORIA POLICE -[47.]
Melbourne Police District Emerald Hill Station 1st December 1882
REPORT of Sergeant Bailey relative to the Death of a man
I have to Report that about 7.30 A.M. this morning a man named Thomas Donnelly Aged 51 years, Dropped down Dead in the Emerald Hill market. From enquiries made it has been ascertained that Deceased was a General Dealer and for some years past has kept a stall in the Emerald Hill market on market days. He had been complaining of severe pains in the region of the heart for several days past. He went to the Emerald Hill market this morning with his wares. At the hour named he went to the George Hotel and drank a glass of Rum and water, and on his return to the market he fell down and Died immediately. Dr. Youl of Emerald Hill was in immediate attendance but he was Dead when the Dr. arrived. There is no marks of Violence on the Body or any suspicious circumstances connected with the Death. The Body was removed to the late residence of Deceased, York Street East. The Inquest will be held at Steet's Hotel, Corner of York and Clarendon Streets, Emerald Hill. Thomas' wife, Mary (Coakley) made the following statement the day he died:-
CORONER'S INQUEST
This Deponent Mary Donlen on her oath saith, I am a Widow of the deceased residing at Emerald Hill
The deceased was my husband. His name was Thomas Donlen. His age was fifty one years. He was a general Dealer. He has left seven children. My husband did not drink. He has been complaining for a week of pains in the chest. My husband left home at about six o'clock this morning to go to the market. He was brought home dead at about eight o'clock. He was in his normal health when he left home.
