(1a) 1638, 24 Apr: The High Sheriff of Southampton commanded a diligent search for provision of victuals to be transported to New England and a stay made of such provisions. As a result of the search at the house of John DUMMER of Swathling was found "six bushels of oaten meal or thereabouts with one brewlock of beer containing 5 bushels of malt or thereabouts, the which was (as the wife of the aforesaid John DUMMER said) for the provision of her son, Thomas DUMMER, his going to New England. Secondly, I found in the house of Thomas DUMMER of Chickenwell one hogshead of beef containing one ox, the which was for the provision of his brother, Richard DUMMER, who was to go for New England. Moreover, I found in the house of Stephen DUMMER of Townehill two hogsheads of beef, five hogsheads of meal, four hogsheads of bacon and malt together [with] two firkins of beer and six cheeses which was for the provision of the aforesaid Stephen, his wife, and children in their voyage for New England. These goods have been by me stayed till Sir John OGLANDER, High Sheriff of this county, may be farther informed of their honor's pleasure therein."

Names wife; eldest daughter Joane NELSON and her children Samuel and Mary NELSON; daughter Margaret CLEMENTS and her children now in New England; other children Thomas, Susan, Hester, Jane and Mary, all under 21.
