About Thomas Harold "Tom" Young, Sr.

Korean War, US Army Cook. Along with late father, Harold, owned and operated Young's Red and White (later SuperValu) for many years, After 33 years he sold the store.He was very interested in politics. He served more than two decades as a Youngwood borough councilman and council president at the time of his death. On at least occasion he ran against congressman John Dent as a Republican.

He had his own publication, "The Money Saver Newspaper", and was a former director with Hempfield Area School District. His community activities included serving as a Boy Scout leader and working to improve Youngwood Area Park and Pool and Youngwood recreation programs.

The bridge by the railroad station was dedicated to him.

He also had a 16-acre farm, which was located near the Youngwood ballfield where he raised chickens, cattle pigs, tomatoes and corn. Most of the produce was sold in the grocery store or from roadside stands manned by his children. He looked out for folks who were down on their luck, inviting them to dinner (which he often made himself) or offering them temporary shelter..

Thomas Harold Young Sr., 73, of Youngwood, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2005. He was born in Dunlo, Pa., on Sept. 1, 1932, the son of the late Harold and Mary Thomas Young. He was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church in Youngwood. He was a 1950 graduate of Youngwood High School. Tom was proud to have been the first Eagle Scout in his community and continued to be a Boy Scout leader for years to come. Tom was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the Korean War. He and his father were grocers for many years and the owners of Young's Red and White since 1962. Tom also owned Young's Custom Catering and the Moneysaver Newspaper. Tom was currently an employee of Proscape in Youngwood. He served one term on the school board for the Hempfield Area School District. At one time, Tom was a dairy farmer and purchased his beloved Mariah Farm in Youngwood, where he entertained family and friends. At his farm, he was able to enjoy his love of organic gardening and raising small livestock. He ran for Congress and the position of state representative. Tom's passion about politics and his love of community were apparent in his commitment to the Youngwood Area Park & Pool, Youngwood recreation programs and spearheading the restoration of the old high school into the present borough offices. Tom received the Thomas F. Chrostwaite Award in 2004 for serving over 20 years in borough government. He was presently the president of the Youngwood Borough Council. Tom was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 211 in Youngwood. Tom will best be remembered for his love of family, love of community and love of country. Tom was predeceased by his first wife, Sara Kathryn Martin Young; and sons, Theodore Arthur Young and Timothy Alan Young. He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Cathy Truxell Young; and children, Thomas H. Young Jr., of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Catherine Crowe and husband, Tim, of Youngwood, Cynthia Watson and husband, Winston, of Scottdale, Carol Young, of Youngwood, and fiance, Steve Kintigh, Sally Young and Chris Eicher, of Connellsville, Sylvia Johnson and husband, Mike, of Youngwood; Jennifer Cammarata and husband, Chris, of Greensburg, Hal Young and his wife, Cindy, of Greensburg, Chad Stannard and his wife, Jodessa Henson, of Portland, Ore., J.W. Young and his wife, Angie, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Kaitlynn Young, of California, Pa., and Jennifer Palangio and husband, Tom, of Irwin; and daughter-in-law, Kimberly Young, of Monroeville. He is also survived by sisters, Audra Harrold and husband, John, of Greensburg, Ruby Porterfield and husband, Leo, Mary Brinker and husband, J.R., all of Hunker; and brothers, Ben Young, of Greensburg, and John Young and wife, Mary Jane, of Youngwood. Tom is also survived by 35 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and special friends, Rob Cammarata and Danny Genard. A celebration of Tom Young's life will be held at 12:30 p.m. Friday at the Christ United Methodist Church, 100 Lincoln St., Youngwood, with the Pastor Chris Livermore officiating.
