About Thomas Harris, of Henrico County

Origins

Maj. William Harris married first Lucy, by whom he had a son Thomas Harris [7042.2.1] and reportedly a daughter about whom we have no information.

William married a second time to Alice. William and Alice were the parents of sons, William and Edward Harris and maybe a third son. Their daughter was Love who Thomas Harris identified as his sister-in-law [half-sister] in his will

There are two conflicting Thomases who are said to be the son of William and Lucy. The Thomas who died in 1679 is said by J. Phillip Harris to be the son of William, not the son of William's father, Thomas. Tom King says that the son Thomas of William & Lucy is the Thomas Harris who married Mary Jefferson (will dated 5 October 1729, recorded 6 Jul 1730).

So, the son of William and Lucy is one of the following Thomases:

  • the Thomas who died unmarried and childless in 1679 - his will names "sister-in-law, Loue Harris [and] my Cozen, Richard Lygon"[9]
  • the Thomas who married Mary Jefferson and died in 1729/30, naming in his will several children - Thomas Harris [a minor], James Harris, John Harris, Mary James, William Harris, Benjamin Harris, Sarah Harris, Phebe Harris, Edith Trent, Ann Booth, Martha Pasture, Francis Harris[10]

THOMAS HARRIS, whose will was probated or recorded June, 1730 in Henrico Co. VA--who were his parents and when was he born? I have two sets of data (at least) and no original sources (alas) for the above THOMAS HARRIS.

  1. 1 -- he was born before 1657 to MAJOR WILLIAM HARRIS (1629-1678) and 2nd wife LUCY STEWART of Henrico. I have this Thomas death recorded as 5 Oct 1729 will probated June 1730, Henrico Co., VA. I have his father as William whose will 1 Feb 1678 probated 20 April 1678 Henrico Co, VA Witnesses Richard Lygon, Ann Stuart. Other then these notations I cannot provide any further details of documentation. (chuck harris)
  2. 2 -- he was born 1669 in Charles City Co. to THOMAS HARRIS (1636 -1677) and YUEVETTE __________

Does anyone have sources for either scenario? My secondary source for #1 is the Virginia Historical Magazine which in turn quotes from a manuscript or other holding of the Virginia Historical Society prepared by W. G. Stanard, Esq. of Richmond, VA for Mrs. Virginia M. Harris Van Voast of Cincinnati. #2 comes from the Harris merged file, quoting individual researchers.
