“This gentleman's father,” continues Hals, “came to an untimely death by means of an unskilful nurse that attended him in his sickness. He being prescribed a clyster, wherein was to be compounded among other things, the herb mercury, the woman bought of the apothecary the poisonous drug mercury, or crocus mattalorum, instead thereof. The fatal consequence of this mistake was, the swelling of his body to such a degree, that his bowels and belly with unspeakable torments burst asunder, and he died greatly lamented.”
