About Thomas Hilborn

Biography

Thomas Hillborn, ancestor of the Bucks county family bearin g this name, was an English Friend, who came to Newtown fro m Shrewsbury, N. J., in the spring of 1702. The year previo us he had purchased 750 acres adjoining Makefield, includin g twenty-five acres in the Newtown townstead. August 20, 17 02, he purchased 130 acres additional, making in all, per C utler's resurvey, 980 acres.

On December 12, 1688, Thomas H illborn married, at her mother's house, Shrewsbury, Elizabe th Hutton, at an appointed meeting of Friends.

Twelve child ren were born of this marriage, the first six at Shrewsbury , the rest at Newtown, viz:

[Thomas Hillborn die d at Newtown, 1723, leaving a will dated 1719, his wife sur viving him several years. Her will, dated 1728, now in poss ession of one of her descendants at Omaha, Nebraska, does n ot seem to have been probated. Elizabeth Hillborn, widow o f Thomas, had purchased of Richard Sunly, a farm in Wrights town, and by the above will, she devised it to her son, Jos eph, subject to his maintenance of her aged mother Elizabet h Hutton, but she subsequently sold the farm. Thomas Hillbo rn, Sr., in his lifetime, conveyed 229 acres to his grandso n, Samuel Hillborn (son of Samuel, deceased) 6 mo. 7, 1717 , which Samuel conveyed to Thomas, 1739, Thomas to his so n Robert, 1779, and Robert to his son Amos, by will, 1793 . On October 22, 1717, Thomas Hillborn, Sr., conveyed 250 a cres to his son Robert, and Robert dying 1720, devised it t o his son Thomas, who, in 1741, having removed to Burlingto n, N. J., sold the whole tract to Peter Taylor. The balanc e of the tract was devised to his son Thomas and to the wid ow Elizabeth, and they conveyed the same, separately, to Jo hn Hillborn, 1726 and 1737, respectively.*

  • Note: Thomas Hilborn [also Hillborn, Hilbourn, Hilbourne]. Baptiz ed Dec. 17, 1655 at St. Mary's Church, North Petherton, Som erset County, England. Died April 30, 1723, in Newtown, Buc ks County, Penn. Son of Robert and Mary (Hayes) Hilborn. Im migrated to Newport, R.I. in 1670 as indentured servant o f Christopher Holder, a Quaker minister. His indenture wa s for four years and was signed March 25, 1670 at Bristol , England. Among Quakers whipped in Boston at some time bef ore 1677. In Shrewsbury, N.J., by Aug. 18, 1687 when he acq uired land from John Tucker of Deale. On March 22, 1687/8 h e received patent to 100 acres of land. Bought other land i n New Jersey in 1690s. Appointed by governor of East and We st Jersey as one of three guardians of his father-in-law o n Feb. 15, 1692/3. Moved to Bucks County, Penn., about 1702.

  • John Hillborn born 1705, marrie d 3 mo. 1730, Rachel Strickland, and removed to Philadelphi a and died there, 1747, leaving five children, Amos, Miles , Joseph, Elizabeth and Frances.*
