  • Thomas Howard, 7th Baron Howard of Effingham was baptised on 7 July 1682.1 He was the son of Francis Howard, 6th Baron Howard of Effingham and Philadelphia Pelham.1 He married, firstly, Mary Wentworth, daughter of Ruishe Wentworth, on 25 February 1706/7.1 He married, secondly, Elizabeth Rotheram, daughter of John Rotheram, on 25 January 1722.1 He died on 13 July 1725 at age 43, without male issue.1

  • (22) Sir William Wentworth, who was created a Baronet, 29 June, 1611, and died in 1614. By his wife, Anne, daughter aud heir of Sir Robert Atkins, Kt., he had eight sons and three daughters ; of whom John, Matthew, Philip, Michael, and Robert, all died unmarried. Mary married Sir Richard Hooton, Kt. ; Anne married Sir George Savile, Kt. ; and Elizabeth married James Dillon, third Earl of Roscommon, and was mother of the celebrated poet, Wentworth Dillon, fourth Earl of Roscommon.
    • The second son, Sir William Wentworth, of Ashby Puerorum, in Lincolnshire, was knighted by Charles I., and fell in his service, at the battle of Marston Moor, 3 July, 1644. He married Elizabeth, daughter and co-heir of Thomas Savile, Esq., and was the ancestor of the Wentworths of Wentworth Castle, Barons Raby, Viscounts Wentworth, and Earls of Strafford of the second creation, which line terminated in an heiress, and which dignities expired on the death of the third Earl, 7 August, 1799. The eighth son, Sir George Wentworth, was also knighted by Charles I., and made General of his forces in Ireland, aud died before 1667 ; he married Frances, daughter and co-heir of Sir Francis Ruishe, Kt., of the county of Kent, and had issue : but his line also terminated in an heiress, who married Thomas, Lord Howard of Effingham, The direct line continued through — _________________

  • Francis, 5th Baron Howard of Effingham (1643-1695), of Great Bookham, Surrey, was the great-grandson of Sir William Howard of Linfeld, who was the second son of William, first Lord Howard of Effingham. Since Lord Francis Howard played a role in pre-revolutionary days as Governor of Virginia, he is dealt with at length in the following chapter.
  • He was succeeded by his second but eldest surviving son, Thomas, as 6th Baron Howard of Effingham (1682-1725). Lord Thomas had no sons, and the Barony devolved upon his brother

  • Lord Francis Howard, 5th Baron of Effingham, of Great Bookham, Surrey was baptized September 17, 1643. His first wife was Philadelphia, daughter of Sir Thomas Pelham, Bt., whom he married July 8, 1673, and by whom he had three sons and three daughters. She died August 13, 1685. On January 20, 1689, he married Susan, widow of Philip Harbord, of Stanninghall, Norfolk, and daughter of Sir Henry Felton, Bt., after he had returned to England.
  • This second marriage was to last a little more than six years, since Lord Effingham died March 30, 1695. She survived him thirty-one years. The title passed to his second but eldest surviving son, Thomas. _____________________
