About Thomas Bruce Ismay

Joseph Bruce Ismay retired from active affairs in the mid-1920s and settled with his wife in Connemara, Co Galway. Costelloe Lodge was burnt by republicans in 1925 and rebuilt in 1925. Ismay’s widow continued to live there for a time after her husband’s death in 1937. His health declined in the 1930s, following a diagnosis of diabetes and the loss of part of his right leg.

"Ismay was known as a good employer in the Costelloe area after he moved there, but he also bore the nickname “Brú síos mé” or “Push me down”, as into the lifeboat." (source: https://www.irishtimes.com/news/connemara-auction-generates-titanic... )

https://www.dreamireland.com/site/Costelloe_Lodge_Connemara.21976.html => "This house was originally designed by Edwin Lutjens for Bruce Ismay the Chairman of the White Star, the company which owned the Titanic ship. As a keen angler, this beautiful part of Connemara was Ismay's chosen retreat following the sinking of the ill-fated Titanic. Landscaped gardens originally designed by Gertrude Jekyll offer a stunning palette of colour to the estate with all the flora and fauna having been carefully selected to complement Connemara's wild and natural beauty."
