Goodspeed Biography 1891 Thomas J. Hill, a native of Lick Mountain Township, where he has thus far spent his entire life, was born in the year 1853, being the fifth of a family of two sons and seven daughters, viz.: Rebecca, the wife of Edward Scroggins; William, who died in the Confederate army; Mary, now Mrs. Jasper Hobe, of Scott County; Margaret, now Mrs. Francis Watts, of Searcy County; Thomas J.; Martha, of the Choctaw Nation; Elizabeth (deceased); Eveline, the wife of Elbert Howard; Angeline, the wife of Daniel Flowers. The parents were Anderson and Minerva (Guinn) Hill, who were born and married in Tennessee, but in about 1848 or 1849 emigrated to Conway County, where they made their future home. Mr. Hill was a farmer and at the breaking out of the late war he tested his patriotism by taking up arms in defense of the union but was not permitted long to engage in that terrible conflict. He died in St. Louis after only a brief service in the cause he so dearly loved. Mrs. Hill afterward married Hezekiah Sneed (now deceased). She was a member of the Christian Church, and died in 1874. The subject of our sketch was thrown on his own resources at a very early age, and he never attended school but a few weeks. At the age of 17 he married Hannah J. Polk, a daughter of Charles and Hannah Polk. Mr. Polk was born in Bedford County, Tennessee, in 1817, and in 1844 removed to Van Buren County, and after the war came to Conway County, where he still resides, a Missionary Baptist. Mrs. Polk died about 1875. Mrs. Hill was born in Van Buren County, and her marriage with Mr. Hill has resulted in the birth of ten children, six of whom are living. Mr. Hill has been a life-long farmer, and for two years has been a resident of his present farm of 140 acres, two miles northwest of Center Ridge. Politically, he is a Republican. He is a member of the Sons of Veterans, and he and his wife are members of the Christian Church. Mrs. Hill's grandparents, William and Sarah Polk, were born in North Carolina but died in Van Buren County.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Mar 8 2021, 16:11:14 UTC
