About Thomas Lathom, of Parbold

"Lathom (Parbold and Allerton, co. Lancaster). Same Arms as Lathom, of Lathom. Crest - An oak branch fesseways truncated and leaved ppr. thereon an eagle".

From: http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=53092&strquery=...

The Lathom's also had Parbold, and as early as 1242 Robert de Lathom was stated to hold one knight's fee in Wrightington and Parbold of Thomas Grelley. (fn. 16) This part was held by the Lathoms of Parbold, who about 1620 acquired the Kirkby portion. Probably the moiety was included in the purchase of the Parbold estates by the Dicconsons.

"I found an error in the problematic pedigree of the Travers family of Nateby.

Agnes Lathom, born circa 1563, is often given in pedigrees as the daughter of Thomas Lathom of Parbold and Anne Eversfield (abbreviated as Ersfield).

This cannot be true:

The Thomas Lathom, who married Anne Eversfield, was 15 years old in 1602 according to his father's portmortem inquisition (Richard Lathom d. 1602).

Therefore Thomas Lathom was born in the year 1587 (he was born 24 years after his alleged daughter Agnes).

Also, Thomas Lathom's first wife: Anne Eversfield was born after 1583 (the date of her parents' marriage) and her grandfather, Sir John Eversfield of Worth, names her as a minor under 18 in his will dated 1594. This proves that Anne Eversfield was born at least 20 years after Agnes Lathom's birth. How can a daughter be 20 years older than her own father and mother?

Another item of note is the Lathoms of Parbold pedigree in Sir William Dugdale's Visitation of Lancashire. Recorded in 1664, it lists Anne Eversfield as having died without issue - no children! The individual who related this information to Dugdale was Richard Lathom, son of Thomas Lathom by his second wife, Elizabeth Preston. It's doubtful Richard Lathom was completely ignorant of the existence of a half-sister by his father's first wife.

We know for a fact that William Travers (1563-1627) did marry an Agnes Lathom who was the daughter of a "Tho. Lathom of Parbold" on the 25th of January in 1584 because he tells us so himself in a pedigree he compiled for Richard St. George, the King's Herald, in 1613.

This leaves only one Thomas Lathom of Parbold as a possible candidate for Agnes' father: the Thomas Lathom born circa 1526 who married Isabel Standish. This Thomas Lathom (who was the grandfather of the Thomas who married Anne Eversfield) is the right age to be the father of Agnes Lathom - it is extremely improbable that it could be anyone else.

So Agnes Lathom was the aunt of the Thomas Lathom who married Anne Eversfield - NOT his daughter."
