According to Barbara Lynch (page 46-47):
... in 1407 he was set upon by a group of men and murdered. What he had done to incite this brutal attack is unknown, but perhaps as justice of the peace he had made some unpopular decisions, and thereby some dangerous enemies. His widow, Ellen, indicted six men - Nicolas Parker, Hugh Shawe, Roger Swynerton, William Snelleston, Thomas Chirton, and William Smalwode - for the crime, but only Parker was convicted. He, in turn, was outlawed and deprived of his lands In Coppenhall and Wich Malbank, Officially that was the end of the affair, but a year after Thomas's death his sons William and Richard were pardoned for some unspecified offence, perhaps they had tried to even the score.
