About Thomas Rider, of Boston

Not the same as Thomas Ryder of Southold

Biography

Thomas Rider was the first husband of Elizabeth Lane. He abandoned Elizabeth and their 5 children (only 4 identified) after her father's death, and Elizabeth petitioned the town 23 May 1655 to help sell the home her father had willed her and Thomas. She married second to Henry Garnsey (unproven).

Elizabeth Lane was born in England, say 1627 to William & Agnes (____) Lane & presumably came to Massachusetts Bay with her parents in 1635 on the "Hopewell" (though only her parents & brother are listed as passengers).

Thomas Rider married by 1649 Elizabeth Lane, daughter of WILLIAM LANE {1635, Dorchester}. Four children were recorded to them at Boston:

  1. ELIZABETH RIDER, bp. Boston 16 October 1649, "daughter of Elizabeth Ryder, a member of the church at Waymouth and the wife of one Thomas Ryder."
  2. JACOB RIDER, bp. Boston 10 August 1651, "son to our sister Elizabeth Rider of the church of Waymouth."
  3. NATHANIEL RIDER, bp. Boston 4 December 1653, "son of Elizabeth Ridder a member of the church of Waymouth."
  4. HANNAH RIDER, b. Boston 7 March 165[4/]5.

A 5th child is indicated from the record of Elizabeth (Lane) Ryder requesting approval to sell the property given to her by her father William Lane. Records of the Governor and Company of the Massachusetts Bay in New England Vol. 3 - page 389 - 23 May 1655 < Hathitrust>

23 May 1655: Elizabeth Rider, the wife of Thomas Rider, of Boston, being left by her husband with fiue small children to mayntayne & no meanes wherewith all to keepe them, desireing libertie from this Court to sell a howse & land in Dorchester, which her father, Wm Lane, gaue to her & her children, in answer to her request, it is ordred, that the select men of the towne of Boston shall & haue powre to dispose of ye sd howse & land, either by sale, morgage, or otherwise, as they shall judge meet, for the vse of the petitior, which this Court doth hereby confirme & allow.

This fifth child is not recorded to Thomas Ryder & Elizabeth Lane in records or other sources.

Speculation points to William Lane of Watertown, born about 1650. He would be named after Elizabeth Lane's father William.

She died after 23 May 1655 in Boston, Massachusetts.

Lane Genealogies ...: William Lane, Dorchester, Mass., 1635. Robert Lane ... page 3. < GoogleBooks >

From the Will of William Lane:

“Unto Thomas Rider my Sonne in Law & daughter Elizabeth his wife, my new dwelling house in Dorchester with all the outhousing, garden etc. only to & for the vse of my daughter & her children fforeuer, except my great Lott in the great Lotts of Dorchester within Pale & without, Estimated 24 Acres more or lesse wch I giue vnto my daughter Mary Long. …

concerns

This Thomas seems to be a conflation of at least two Thomases:

  • the so-named son of Rogerus Ryder and Elizabeth Bryan
  • the so-named son of Thomas Ryder (1577-1615) and Mary Agnes Dennis
  • the husband of Elizabeth Lane
  • the husband of Abigail Terry (shown here on GenI as Thomas, son of this Thomas)
