Thomas Riney along with David Winfield and John McCarter, witnessed the will of Charles Graves, 20 March 1796 in Washin gton Co., KY. Charles Graves, surviving spouse was Ellender. Ex. Joseph Allevey, James Austin. [from Abstracts of Ear ly KY Wills, p 232, King, J. Estelle, 1965.]

Thomas Riney traveled to Missouri in 1799 when he was about 15 years old to make a claim on land. He must have plante d some crop at that time. Afterwards he returned to Kentucky, married Miss Sarah Jane Duvall and moved to Missouri . O n 3 February 1806 he was officially granted 768 acres of land from a Spanish Land Grant at Ste. Genevieve in the Uppe r Louisiana Territory. However, in the 1828 Tax List Thomas is listed as having 300 acres from his original claim #84 4 situated in twp 36.

When Thomas died, his will was contested. In the St. Genevieve Plain Dealer about June of 1860 was this item: Report o f the Perry Co. Circuit Court Term April 1860 through May 1860. A large number of persons including kin of Thomas Rine y signed a petition to set aside his will. Those against the petition as it stood were: Sarah Riney, Severius Riney, B ernard Cissell, and Luvina, his wife, Emily Tucker, Gregory Brewer and Sarah his wife, Thomas A. Riney, Sarah Bishop, N ancy Moore, and Simon Riney,[ his son ], Mary Layton, James Layton, and John Layton, Defendants. Charles Ellis, Cler k .
