Biography
Thomas Savage was born August 2, 1668, in Boston, Massachusetts, a son of Thomas and Elizabeth Savage. (see notes) Thomas became a freeman on March 22, 1689/90, meaning he was free to conduct business in the city of Boston. On March 9, 1701/2 he was chosen a constable, to serve for the ensuing year. He was chosen a selectman of Boston on March 8, 1792/3, March 13, 1703/4 and March 10, 1711/12. In 1714, Thomas was granted permission to sell liquor at retail "without doors."
About 1693, Thomas married Margaret Lynde, daughter of the Hnorable Josesph Lynde and Sarah (Davison) Lynde, of Charlestown. Children of Thomas and Margaret were all born in Boston:
Elizabeth Savage, born August 1, 1694, died December 19, 1694, in Boston Thomas Savage, born April 20, 1697, died July 13, 1697, in Boston Margaret Savage, born September 10, 1698, died June 12, 1785, in Boston, married the Honorable John Alford, son of Benjamin Alford and Mary (Richards) Alford, of Charlestown Thomas Savage, born September 17, 1700, died April 8, 1703, in Boston Thomas Savage, born September 9, 1703, died March 20, 1712/13, in Boston Elizabeth Savage, born September 28/29, 1704, died August 7, 1778, in Boston, married Joshua Winslow, son of Edward Winslow and Hannah (Moody) Winslow Joseph Savage, born August 27, 1707, died September 23, 1707, in Boston Thomas died in Boston on March 3, 1720/21. Sewall notices his funeral at length in his diary, saying that he "was buried in his Grandfather Savage's Tomb in the Old Burying place" (King's Chapel). Thomas left his real estate, which included a brik house and stable in Dock Square, a lot of land on Boston Neck, a brick house and land on Union Street, and a wooden house on Union Street, and land on Marlborough Street, to his widow and sons-in-law. Margaret (Lynde) Savage, who was born at Charlestown on January 24 or 31 in 1668/9 (see notes) survived her husband, but died in Boston between March 21, 1720/1 and July 5, 1721.
Researcher's Notes
The first son of Thomas and Elizabeth Savage was born on July 20, 1665, in Boston, was also named Thomas, for his father, but died young.
Old Style Calendar Before 1752 the year began on Lady Day, March 25th,. Dates between January 1st and March 24th were at the end of the year. Old Style (O.S.) and New Style (N.S.) are used to indicate whether the year has been adjusted. Often both dates are used.
