About Reverend Doctor Thomas Somerville, Minister of the Gospel at Jedburgh
I am related to Rev. Dr. Thomas Somerville. My basic tree is here http://www.geni.com/share?t=6000000013246411715
I have all the baptism/birth records, deaths and marriage certs I am just too tired to put them in at present. Basically one of the Rev. Dr's daughters — Martha married William Rutherford, — in their 30s also (which surprised me as it seems quite late in life) one of their many children was Thomas Sommerville Rutherford who married Jessie McDougal, who had 3 children, one of which was William George Rutherford — he moved to New Zealand in 1885 and married Helen Sawbridge and one of their children Jessie Rutherford was my Great Grandmother. I have read a bit of Rev. Dr. Somerville's book and also http://www.archive.org/stream/annalsabordercl00tancgoog/annalsabord... — 'annals of a border club' which mentions his children's spouses, etc., and one of them Martha marrying William Rutherford.
It's great to be related to him as it has made the tree finding a bit easier because of Mary Sommerville. But I don't know much about the Rutherford side except William opened the first RBS in Jedburgh — The bank sent me information about this which was interesting.
We visited Jedburgh the other year after doing the research. At Jedburgh Abbey is a large momument stone that is on one of the dront pillars with the Rutherfords names all on it, it is close to the Rev. Somerville's tomb stones (Pringle's is next to it too). It starts with Martha Somerville (Rev's daughter) who married William Rutherford and ends with William George Rutherford who died in NZ in 1919. I Don't know who got the last engraving done of William George Rutherford'd death as he went to NZ and died in 1919 — we think perhaps his son Roland might of been responsible and he could have been visiting the UK around that time but we are not sure.
