Notes
“ Thomas Sorrell, in his will made in 1725, desired to be buried by his dear mother, which indicated his mother was dead. Thomas Sorrell moved to Westmoreland where he was Clerk of the Court from Dec. 20, 1715 to Oct. 1726. He married Elizabeth, daughter of Daniel Ocanny of Westmoreland, who in his will dated and probated 1716 mentions his “son-in-law Thomas Sorrell” and also his Crabbe grandchildren (Fothergill, p. 61). Osman Crabbe, the son-in-law of Daniel Ocanny, died in 1713 and in his will appointed his “brother-in-law Thomas Sorrell” trustee. (Id. 69)

Thomas Sorrell’s will, dated Oct. 8, 1725, and proved Feb. 22, 1726, as follows: “…to son James all the land I live on; all my lands at the head of Nominy where I formerly lived to my son John, and also to him the lands devised to me by my father-in-law Daniel Occany; to my son James the land in James City County which my honored father, John Sorrell, devised to me and also 1/3 of my mill. 2/3 of my mill to my son John. To my nephew Thomas Sorrell the land where James Holloway now lives, on condition that my nephew quit claim title to the land adjoining my dwelling seat which he hath promised.
I have purchased the land in James City County devised to my brother John Sorrell, dec’d….. to my loving consort all her wearing apparel, rings, etc., horse saddle, and furniture, the use of three salves and all my other estate during my children's minority, she clothing and educating them. All the rest of my estate equally between wife and children. To son John two negroes and to son James, after his mothers death, those given to her. To my aforesaid nephew and his sisters, Elizabeth and Frances a mourning ring apiece and a prayer book to each. (Motto on rings, “Memento Mori”) bequests to daughters Ann and Winifred. Son James to be an assistance to his mother in teaching his little sisters, which I charge upon my blessing do.” The will appointed Loving consort, Elizabeth, Capt. George Turbeville and Wm. Sherman as executrix and executors.
…the court records, dated Feb. 25, 1726, show that George Turbeville and William Sherman, THE SURVIVING EXECUTORS, are to administer the will. This proves that Elizabeth died sometime between the date of the will, Feb. 22, 1725, and the date of a codicil made to the will on Jan. 12, 1726. This codicil did not mention his wife, “Elizabeth” but provided “that son James was to give John 5000 lbs. tbco., and to each of his sisters 1000 lbs. tbco. When each of them shall attain their respective ages or Day of Marriage, and if he (James) refuses to comply then land and plantations revert to John.”

3. Lettice, m. Ambrose Callis. “On Feb. 25, 1730, Ambrose Callis, who intermarried with Lettice, one of the daughters and legatees of Thomas Sorrell, late of the county decd.; not only the said Callis signed in right of his wife, but that all other said children of the said decedent may know the rationable parts of their said father’s estate.” (Id. O.B. 1721-31 p. 356) Ambrose Callis died in 1737 and Lettice then married John Wilcocks, who died intestate in Frederick County, 1748. (W.B. 1, p. 176) She had two Wilcocks daughters, one married John Reed and the other William Warren. They moved to Danville, Ky. Lettice married thirdly, Charles Buck, and had two sons, Charles and Thomas Buck. One moved to Woodford Co., Ky., and the other lived near Front Royal, Va. Charles Buck, Sr., made his will in Shenandoah Co., Va., in 1770. His wife survived him.
