About Thomas Starke

Disproved as son of John Stark by DNA testing:

From discussion https://www.geni.com/discussions/170248?msg=1160929

"After 35 years researching this family I was surprised but not shocked when DNA proved that he could not have been a son of Col. John Starke. I have always questioned the dates that were off from his obituary (I have a copy of the original) dated 1794 and states that Thomas was in his 70th year, making his date of birth 1724. We are not even close to Col. John Starke as their haplogroup is G and ours is F1b1.
"So far, there are no other Stark(e) families with our DNA - we are on our own!
"Also, it was another Thomas Stark who married Elizabeth Dozier - a son of James Stark of Stafford Co., VA. So far I have found NO proof of Elizabeth's surname - although some believe it was Jones since the only child given a middle name was their son, my direct ancestor, Phillip Jones Stark (Thomas dropped the 'e' from the surname saying it was 'too English'), however, while I do find a marriage that would fit of a Thomas Starke marrying Elizabeth there is no surname given. The DAR accepts Jones or no surname, so I am told, although I have not or will not try to join the DAR or any other heritage organization. "

"Died - On Friday the tenth of October died at his seat near the town of Washington, in the county of Wilkes, Mr. Thomas Starke aged 70 years. His disorder was the gout; which suddenly seizing on the vitals, put an end to a well spent life, before the necessary means could be obtained, for driving it to the extremities. This painful disorder which he inherited from his ancestors - he had born [sic] for upwards of thirty years, with a degree of fortitude that did honor to the man, the Christian, and the philosopher. His industry and economy constantly enabled him to assist the needy; and his assistance was always ready, where the object was worthy; but idleness and dissipation, he chose to discourage. He never took usury for money lent, tho’ he lent often - perhaps oftener than any man in the state." (Augusta Chronicle [Augusta, Richmond County, GA] Saturday, 1 Nov 1794, p. 3, column 3; University of Georgia, Athens, GA)
