   Whereas, I Robert Webster of Hartford doe see Cause to set my house in order and doe declare this to bee my last Will & Testament, I give all to my wife Susannah Webster during her widowhood. But if my wife change her name, then I give her but one-third part of my estate. the remainder to be equally divided amongst my children, except the Eldest a double portion; to my sons at 21 years of age, and to my daughters at 18 years of age. I make my wife sole Executrix, and desire Mr. John Coales sen., Andrew Benton sen., and John Blackleach of Hartford to be Overseers.

   "Robert Isbell, died about 1655.

   "He may have been the Robert Isabell who had land granted him in Salem 1637 (Felts's History of Salem, p. 169.). He left relict Ann, (who married William Nicholls,) and two children Eleazar and Hannah. Eleazar married Nov. 1st, 1668, Elizabeth French and removed to Killingworth, where he died, 1677.

   "Hannah Isbell married first Thomas Stedman, August 6th, 1668, and second John Fox, both of New London."

   "Sergeant Daniel Lester, oldest son of Andrew, lived upon the Great Neck, where he died January 16th, 1716-1717. He was brought into town and buried under arms. Joseph and Benjamin Lester also settled on farms in the vicinity of the town plot. The descendnants of the latter are very numerous. By his first wife, Ann Stedman, he had nine sons and two daughters, and probably other children by a second wife. No descendnants of Timothy, son of Andrew Lester have been traced."

   "William Nicholls, died September 4th, 1673.

   "A person of this name, and probably the same man, had land given him in Salem, 1638. (Felt, p. 169) He was an early and substantial settler at Pequot; often on committees, and sustaining both town and church offices. He married Ann, relict of Robert Isbell, but no allusion is made to children by this or any former wife. Widow Ann Nicholls died September 15th, 1689. Her two children, by her first husband, died before her, but she left four grandchildren, a son and daughter of Eleazer Isbell, and a son and daughter of Thomas Stedman."

   "Thomas Stedman, died in 1701.

   "This name is found at New London, at the early date of 1649, but it soon afterward disappears. In 1666, Thomas Stedman is again on the list of inhabitants, living near Niantic River. He married (Aug. 6th, 1668) Hannah, daughter of Robert Isbell, and step-daughter to William Nicholls. They had two children, John, born Dec. 25th, 1669, and Ann, who married Benjamin Lester. John left descendants.

   "Thomas Stedman, of New London, was brother of Lieut. John Stedman, of Wethersfield, who in 1675, was commander of a company of sixty dragoons, raised in Hartford county. The following letter on record at New London, is evidence of this connection:

   'Loving brother Thomas Stedman.

   'My love to yourself and your little ones, my cousins, and to Uncle Nichols and to Aunt and to the rest of my friends, certifying you that through God's mercy and goodness to us, we are in reasonable good health.

   'Brother, These are to get you to assist my son in selling or letting my house which I bought of Benjamin Atwell, and what you shall do in that business I do firmly bind myself to confirm and ratify. As witness my hand this last day of October, 1672, from Wethersfield.'

   "Extracted out of the original letter under the hand of John Stedman, Sen."

   "Samuel Fox, died September 4th, 1727, aged seventy-seven.

   "Samuel and John Fox were sons of Thomas Fox, of Concord. Samuel Fox married Mary, supposed to be daughter of Andrew Lester, and born in Gloucester, in 1647, March 30th, 1675-6. The had a son Samuel, born April 24th, 1681. After this he contracted a secon, third and fourth marriage, and had sons, Isaac, Samuel and Benjamin, which should probably be assigned to the second wife, Joanna, who died in 1689. The thrid wife was Bathesheba, relect of Richard Smith, and daughter of James Rogers, (born in Milford, 1650.) There is no record made of any marriages or births in the family after 1681. A singular caprice led Mr. Fox and and some others in that day to give the same name to two children by a different mother. When a name, therefore, is repeated in a list of children, it is not always an indication that the first named had died before the borth of the other. Samuel Fox, in his will, makes bequests to his two sons, Samuel the elder and younger. The former had settled in the North Parish, at a place still known as Fox's Mills. He is the ancestor of the Fox families of Montville.

   "John Fox, son of Thomas, of Concord, married Sarah, daughter of Greenfield Larrabee, June 2d, 1678. They had a son John born June 1st, 1680, who died December 12th, 1711, leaving a wife Elizabeth, but no children. They had other sons and daughters, but all died without issue, except Benjamin. In a deed of 1718, he calls Benjamin, "my only child which it hath pleased God to continue in the land of the living."

   "John Fox married, 2. Hannah, relict of Thomas Stedman; 3. Mary, daughter of Daniel Lester, 2nd. His last wife was fifty years younger than himself, and granddaughter to his sister.

   "[The wife of Daniel Lester, Sen., was Hannah Fox, of Concord. This singualr connection is mentioned in the New England Weekly Journal, printed in Boston, April 20th, 1730, after noticing the death of John Fox.]"

   Comments:

   I see a few problems with information presented in these articles. The first was that Hannah Isbell supposedly pre-deceased her mother Ann (---) (Isbell) Nicholls. Various New London records show that Hannah died in March 1707/08.

   About 1690, the widow Hannah Stedman married John Fox of New London.  The baptismal records of the church at New London contains this record:

   "Sept. 29, 1706.  John Stedman's children being presented by yr grandmother John Fox's wife were baptized, Hannah, Jane"

   These facts imply that Thomas Stedman must have died before 1701. New London records show that Hannah had a daughter Hannah Fox by John Fox in 1693.

Thomas Stedman was born in the United Kingdom. Some early researchers have suggested he came from Scotland; however, there is no evidence found yet to confirm this.

He came to America as a mariner before 1649 with an older brother John Stedman. Either he, or a father also named Thomas Stedman, applied for a land grant in New London about 1649; however, Thomas Stedman did not follow through with the application.

He (or his father) seems to have settled in Essex county, Massachusetts Colony. He returned to New London with several other mariner families, including Isbells, Parkers, Fosters, Keaneys in the mid-1660s. There is some indication Thomas Stedman was married in Essex county.

It would seem that he was a sailor from the port of New London after he returned.

He married Hannah Isbell in 1668 and they had two children John and Ann.

Thomas Stedman probably died or was lost at sea sometime after 1676, although there is a record of a Thomas Stedman dying in New London in 1701. Given that Hannah Isbell remarried John Fox sometime before 1688, I assume that the Thomas Stedman who died in 1701 was not the Thomas Stedman who married Hannah Isbell. That Thomas Stedman could have been his nephew Thomas Stedman. _____________
