THOMAS THORNBROUGH married SARAH MARY HAMAN, November 12, 1713, Cootehill, Ireland. The Haddenfield, New Jersey meeting minutes for April 9th, 1718 say, "Thomas Thornbrough produced a certificate from meeting held at Cootehill to the satisfaction of this meeting." Subsequent meeting records spell his name THORNBURY, THORNBY and THORNBERRY.
They were received at New Garden Monthly meeting in Pennsylvania on 6/26/1732 on a certificate dated 9/8/1731 from Haddonfield. Their daughter Margaret's marriage to Mathew Atkinson, son of Stephen Atkinson, is recorded at New Garden when she was dismissed on 8/22/1737 for 'marrying out of unity'.
There are land records for Thomas Thornbrough, Sr. in Virginia, where he moved on certificate dated 2/7/1740 from Sadbury MM in Pennsylvania. A record dated November 26, 1750 of a grant of 862 acres refers to him as "Thomas, the elder", so we know there was another Thomas there who was probably his son.
Late in 1756, Thomas and Sarah were forced to leave Virginia and return to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The Yearly Meeting of Sufferings in Philadelphia was informed "that Thomas Thornbrough and his wife, 2 Aged Friends, belonging to Monthly Meeting of Hopewell, have sometime ago been driven from their habitation by the incursion of the Indian Enemies on the frontiers…" At the same time our ancestor, Walter, chose to go south to North Carolina.
Sarah died before 1758 and Thomas died July 20, 1758. SAMUEL THORNBURGH, the son of Thomas and Sarah made his home on Lyons Creek that runs through Baltimore. His wife Sarah and their three sons, John Richard and Abraham were members of the Patspasco Branch of the Gunpowder MM. When Samuel died in 1682 his family sold all their holdings and moved to New Castle County, Delaware.
Only Robert, Margaret and Benjamin are named in Thomas' will. Benjamin Thornburg's son, Benjamin Thornburg Jr. went to Tennessee by 1787, where he married Sarah Hayes. When Abraham Woodward purchased land in Tennessee, some of his parcels of land are mentioned as being adjacent to Benjamin Thornbrough.
Their daughter, Sarah Alice, married James Woodward, brother of Abraham Woodward at Old Swede's Church in Wilmington, Delaware on 2/16/1758.
Thomas Thornbrough's will lists only three of his children.
