About Thomas Weatherwax
Thomas was an ardent Unionist during the Civil War and, despite his age, volunteered to serve. He was placed in a company of like-minded older gentlemen (Co. A, 37th Iowa Infantry) - the so-called "Greybeards." They were usually assigned to picket duty and the guarding of prisoners.
