He migrated to Davidson Co. Tenn. from Virginia, together with his brother John Wilkes and his wife Betsy Stegall Wilkes, settling near the Harpeth River not far from the city of Nashville. He purchased 100 acres on Cumberland River, Davidson County., Tenn. in 1805, where he bred horses.
His estate settlement and inventory first appeared in Davidson County. in 1810. In settlement, Benjamin Wilkes bought a colt, and Burwell Wilkes of Virginia was paid for a stud horse.
This Burwell Wilkes, of Charlie Hope, Brunswick Co. Virginia, was famous in the South for breeding "Quarter Horses" - horses which could run best for a quarter-mile only.
