The "North Durham" left Fiume on the 1st December 1893 with a crew of 23 hands all told, under command of Captain Robert Williams, Bodeuon, Nefyn, Caernarvonshire.
Having taken on board 150 tons of coal, the "North Durham" left Gibraltar on the 15th December with about the same dead weight as she had on leaving Fiume.
On the 10th February 1894, a life buoy marked "North Durham" was picked up off Port Bail, Normandy, and on the 14th of the same month her name board was washed ashore at Portsal, on the coast of Finnisterre, France.
To ensure that she had sufficient stability for the voyage on which she was lost, she should either have had one or more of her ballast tanks filled, in which case she would have been overladen; or she should have carried less cargo in her 'tween decks.
According to the evidence, the "North Durham" while crossing the Bay of Biscay would have met with weather varying from strong westerly breezes to strong gales, in one of which we have very little doubt but that her cargo again shifted, that she became unmanageable, and ultimately foundered.
