"Cambrian News, April 6 1928. The death of Mr Thomas Sylvanus, Penllwyn. The death occurred on Thursday of Mr Thomas Sylvanus, Brynhyfryd, at the age of 48. The deceased was the youngest son of the late Mr Sylvanus, weaver, and of Mrs Sylvanus, Brynhyfryd. He was educated at Penllwyn School, whence he went to Aberystwyth Commercial and Grammar School, under the care of the late Mr Tom Owen. Mr Sylvanus passed the civil service examination and entered the Admiralty Department in 1896, where he remained until 1912, when he was appointed to an important post on the Welsh National Insurance staff, Cardiff, and remained in that position until ill-health compelled him to retire about two years ago. His remains were laid to rest at the Chapel Cemetery on Tuesday. In a memorial service at the Chapel, the Rev. M H Jones B.A. who with the Rev. Iorwerth Edwards B.A. officiated, eulogised his industry as an antiquary, his varied intellectual interest, and his devotion to the great things of life. Mr John Rowlands M.N.O. Cardiff said he had worked with Mr Sylvanus for 16 years, and never had he met with a more upright man. His unassuming manner, his fidelity to his colleagues and strict observance to duty were unique. His life was such as to serve as a far-shining light to the young people of his neighbourhood. Mrs Hubert Davies A.L.C.M. presided a the organ. the mourners were Mrs Sylvanus, widow; Mrs Sylvanus, mother, Mr Job Sylvanus, brother; Mr & Mrs Jones, Tynrhelig, Tynrhos; Mrs Jenkins, Talwrn. Mr Isaac, Mountain, Rhiwbwys, cousins. Mr J K Davies Cardiff, Mr Dewi Morgan, Aberystwyth, brothers in law; Mr & Mrs Edwards, Endsleigh; Miss Eleanor Griffiths, South End (cousins) and Nurse Isaac, Penparce.

  • Welsh Gazette. The death incurred at a nursing home on Thursday at the age of 48, of Mr Thomas Sylvanus, Brynhyfryd, Penllwyn, and formerly of the Welsh National Health Insurance Staff, Cardiff. Mr Sylvanus, a native of Penllwyn, entered the Civil Service (Admiralty Department in 1896. In 1912 he was appointed to an important post on the Welsh National Health Insurance staff at Cardiff, where he remained until ill-health compelled him to resign about two years ago. In his spare time he did much research work, and his collection of Welsh books was a unique one. a member of the Cardiganshire Antiquarian Society, he had written extensively on the antiquities of his native county. His death is mourned by a large circle of friends. The deceased was the youngest son of the late Mr Job Sylvanus, Brynhyfryd, and was educated at Penllwyn School under the late Mr Adams, and at the Grammar School, Aberystwyth, under the late Mr Thomas Owen. A very widely read man, his mind was well-stored with the lore and history of his native country. Literature and archaeology were twin interest with him. Country life appealed greatly to him, and he knew intimately, all the historic spots in North Cardiganshire, and had collected all writings bearing on the same, and had written extensively on the antiquities of the district. Tough of a quiet and retiring disposition, he was a charming personality. A man whose courtesies was unfailing, whose conversation was always interesting, and whose rectitude and absolute sincerity secured him the deep attachment of all who had the privilege of knowing him. He is survived by a widow, mother and brother, with whom deep sympathy is felt. The funeral took place on Tuesday, the mortal remains being laid to rest at the chapel cemetery.
