About Tilford Marion Hogan
NOTE: Information/Documents Compiled by Jason Edward Kennedy
- *******Great Grandfather of Marilyn Monroe******* see family documentation at www.marilynmonroefamily.com
Taken from the May Issue of Kentucky Explorer 1995. This article was pertaining to Marilyn Monroe's roots in Kentucky.
The Hogan brothers, William, James and John (John being Monroe's GGGG-grandfather) were members of Daniel Boone's second scouting party that came to Kentucky in 1779-1780. It was William Hogan who married Sarah Grant (the orphaned girl raised by Daniel and Rebecca Boone) afterwards settling at Bryan's Station where their first child, David was born on March 2, 1781, making him the second child born on Kentucky soil.
Prior to 1779-80, other members of the HOGAN family, named Richard, Edward and Phillip joined Boone on one of his earliest explorations into the Kentucky wilderness. It was James and John Hogan, however, who began one of Kentucky's first Ferry services located at the mouth of Hickman Creek in Jessamaine County. Ferry service that was used for many years transferring pioneers back and forth across the Kentucky River.
John Hogan's grandson, George W. Hogan, along with his wife, Sarah Ann Owen, left Grant County during the mid 1840's for Illinois, however, they were detained in Louisville long enough for a daughter, Mary, and two sons, John F. and William J., to be born. Continuing on their way, the family arrived in Concord, Illinois where their 3rd son, Newton, was born February 3, 1850. There also, on February 24, 1851, their 4th son, Tilford Marion, was born. (Tilford was the great grandfather of Marilyn Monroe.)
Leaving Illinois, the Hogan family eventually settled in Linn County, MO, where Della Mae Hogan was born July 1, 1876 to Tilford M. and Jeanie CV Hogan.
