He was the son of Capt. Joseph Hawley(1675-1752) & Elizabeth Wilcoxson(1673-1762). He spent most of his adult life in E. Granby, Ct (Turkey Hills). Married twice, first to Sarah Thompson, two children, second to Rachel Forward,four children: Jesse, Rufus(married Deborah Kent in 1770), Abigail, and Deborah.
