Tirzah STILES was the daughter of Tirzah LOOMIS and Martin STILES.

Her first name was from the Old Testament, meaning "she is my delight" in Hebrew. It was also the name of one of the five daughters of Zelophehad whose petition to Moses for their hereditary rights established the right of Jewish women to own property. Her daughter Mary Ann STILES AUSTIN named one of her daughters Tirzah.

By the time Tirzah STILES was born she could have potentially heard generations of stories about her paternal ancestors in America, possibly also about her ancestry in England. The Stiles family was resident in New England from 1634, the accepted year of immigration of the first Stiles. In her later years a relative, the Rev. Ezra Stiles, former president of Yale College (as it was then known) compiled a two volume work on the family in manuscript form, which has served as the foundation of subsequent publications by Stiles researchers.

On 30 January 1812 Tirzah married Seth E. WEBSTER in Westfield, MA. Seth was born in East Hartford, CT and his arrival date in MA is not known.

Following the death of Seth in 1822, his widow Tirzah was appointed guardian of their children. She remarried that same year to John SARGENT/SARGEANT in Menden, NY.

Their known children (born in Mendon, Monroe Co, NY):

1) Elizabeth Sargent
b. 4 Dec 1831

Husband: Frederick Probst

Tirzah is found on the 1850 Mendon census with Seth Webster, Jr., and Elizabeth & on the 1870 census living with Elizabeth & Frederick (as Thereza Sargent).

Mention is made of TIRZAH STILES as the wife of her second husband, John Sargent of Mendon, NY in the "Landmarks of Monroe County NY", by William F. Peck, Part III, pp. 86-87. Pub. 1895.

Under the name of Frederick Probst, a Swiss immigrant, is made mention of his marriage to Elizabeth E. Sargent, "daughter of John Sargent of Menden, who came from Newburyport, Mass., in an early day. Mrs. Sargent was a Mrs. Webster of Mendon, whose maiden name was Tirzah Stiles, coming from Westfield, Mass., previous to 1817."

The article states that the young couple returned to the Sargent farm in 1856 where they remained as of 1895, having had only one child, a daughter who died in infancy.

Appreciation: Much gratitude to Cheri Branca, creator of this page, for her attention to detail in building it and generosity in the transfer of ownership.

Sources: Some info from "The Pioneers of Mendon" by Anah Yates.

Also, works by the Rev. Ezra Stiles, Dr. Henry Reed Stiles, and Mrs. Mary Stiles (Paul) Guild, are available on Google Books online. It is best to search for their works by author name - they each revised and re-published, and at least once Dr. Stiles published about 30 pages of Stiles genealogy privately in limited editions, much like pamphlets. Any attempt to use just one publication by any of these authors as the last word on research for this family will include errors of the time.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Oct 31 2022, 21:27:46 UTC
