The first Maramon Convention was held on the Parappuzha Manalpuram River
bank in between Maramon Mar Thoma Church and Aranmula Temple - for 10
days from Friday, 9 March to Sunday, 18 March 1895. The Pandal (Tent) was big
enough to accommodate 7000 persons. Mr. David and Mr. Wordsworth were the
main speakers. Mar Thoma Metropolitan Titus I inaugurated the first meeting. Deacon
Kakkasseri Varughese of Kunnamkulam translated the messages from English to
Malayalam.
25 March, 1908 (11 Meenam 1083 M.E): God saves Titus I Mar Thoma.
Headquarters of our Church was shifted from Maramon to Tiruvalla in 1908. At
that time there was no Aramana (Bishop’s House) in Tiruvalla and the Bishop
Titus I was staying in a thatched building near the present SCS School. In the
early hours of 11 Meenam 1083 M.E, this building was set on fire by the enemies
of the Mar Thoma Church. The Bishop, who was sleeping in this building, was
saved by the children and boarding master, that stayed in the nearby S. C. S.
School.
2 April, 1893: (Palm Sunday) Kakkassery K. M. Varughese makes his maiden
sermon in his home Parish. K. M. Varughese (b.1868) got married at the age of
12 to his wife who was only 8 years old. A year later his wife died and he
remarried. In 1895, in a meeting of the Church authorities (Samasthalochana
Sanghom) held in the Puthencavu Mar Thoma Church, amendments were made
to its prevailing rules to ordain Mr. K. M. Varughese (during that time married
men were not ordained by the Church). In 1895, he was ordained as a deacon
by Most. Rev. Titus I at the Paliyekkarara Church in Tiruvalla. Many in his home
parish were not willing to accept him as a deacon as he was a married man. He
was the translator of the first Maramon Convention held in 1895. He became
priest in 1896, but never celebrated Holy Communion in his life. He was called
home on 20 June, 1897.

Pally. He was our Metropolitan from 18 January 1894 to 20 October 1909.
