11-18 February 2001: First Maramon Convention 1895 (Maramon convention)

The first Maramon Convention was held on the Parappuzha Manalpuram River

bank in between Maramon Mar Thoma Church and Aranmula Temple - for 10

days from Friday, 9 March to Sunday, 18 March 1895. The Pandal (Tent) was big

enough to accommodate 7000 persons. Mr. David and Mr. Wordsworth were the

main speakers. Mar Thoma Metropolitan Titus I inaugurated the first meeting. Deacon

Kakkasseri Varughese of Kunnamkulam translated the messages from English to

Malayalam.

25 March, 1908 (11 Meenam 1083 M.E): God saves Titus I Mar Thoma.

Headquarters of our Church was shifted from Maramon to Tiruvalla in 1908. At

that time there was no Aramana (Bishop’s House) in Tiruvalla and the Bishop

Titus I was staying in a thatched building near the present SCS School. In the

early hours of 11 Meenam 1083 M.E, this building was set on fire by the enemies

of the Mar Thoma Church. The Bishop, who was sleeping in this building, was

saved by the children and boarding master, that stayed in the nearby S. C. S.

School.

2 April, 1893: (Palm Sunday) Kakkassery K. M. Varughese makes his maiden

sermon in his home Parish. K. M. Varughese (b.1868) got married at the age of

12 to his wife who was only 8 years old. A year later his wife died and he

remarried. In 1895, in a meeting of the Church authorities (Samasthalochana

Sanghom) held in the Puthencavu Mar Thoma Church, amendments were made

to its prevailing rules to ordain Mr. K. M. Varughese (during that time married

men were not ordained by the Church). In 1895, he was ordained as a deacon

by Most. Rev. Titus I at the Paliyekkarara Church in Tiruvalla. Many in his home

parish were not willing to accept him as a deacon as he was a married man. He

was the translator of the first Maramon Convention held in 1895. He became

priest in 1896, but never celebrated Holy Communion in his life. He was called

home on 20 June, 1897.

20 October 1909: Titus I Mar Thoma Metropolitan (born on 8 Feb, 1843) passes

away. Titus I Mar Thoma was consecrated as bishop after the death of Thomas

Mar Athanasius by the Metropolitan of the Thozhiur Church at Kottayam Cheria

Pally. He was our Metropolitan from 18 January 1894 to 20 October 1909.

(born on 08 Feb 1843) was the fourth son of Abraham Malpan The main events

that happened during his episcopate are: Beginning of Maramon Convention,

Establishment of Theological Seminary at Kottayam, Formation of Sunday

School Samajam and the beginning of Mission work out side Travancore (in

Karwar in North Canara)

Birth of Titus I Mar Thoma. Titus I Mar Thoma (son of
Abraham Malpan) was widely recognized as a saintly Bishop. During his time as
Metropolitan of the Church, the well known educational institutions, Mar Thoma
Seminary Kottayam and S.C. Seminary Tiruvalla came into being. The Sunday
School Samajam was established during his time. He was called to his eternal
home on 29th October 1909.
