Abundant biographical information on the well-known dancer Trudl DUBSKY always gives her year of birth as 1913 ... BUT it should be 1910.

For whatever reason - Trudl must either have intentionally or mistakenly altered her actual age at some point and this was continued throughout her later life - even erroneously etched on her gravestone.

As it became clear that her brother Erich was not only born in the same year but within what would be too few months of his sister sharing exactly the same parents, research was actively and painstakingly pursued with ... SUCCESS at last!

Trudl Dubsky Zipper Tänzerin, Tanzpädagogin

Geb. 1913 in Wien. Mit neun Jahren Tanzunterricht an der Akademie für Musik und Darstellende Kunst, Mitglied des Bodenwieser-Ensembles, mit dem sie zahlreicheTourneen durch Europa unternahm. 1932 Gründung der Rutherstone Dubsky School of Rhythmic Movement in London. 1933 krankheitshalber Rückkehr nach Wien, ab 1935 wieder als Tänzerin und Tanzlehrerin für das Bodenwieser-Ensemble bzw. die Bodenwieser-Schule tätig. Herbst 1937 Übersiedlung nach Manila, wo sie das Department für Tanz an der University of the Philippines einrichtete und als Tanzpädagogin wirkte. Machte gemeinsam mit der Wienerin Käthe Hauser den europäischen Ausdruckstanz auf den Philippinen bekannt. 1939 Eheschließung mit Herbert Zipper.

1946 Weiteremigration in die USA, Direktorin des Tanzdepartments an Erwin Piscators Dramatic Workshop an der New School for Social Research, New York. Eröffnung eines eigenen Tanzstudios. 1952 Übersiedlung nach Chicago, Gründung eines Tanzdepartments an der von Herbert Zipper geleiteten Winnetka School of Music. 1972 Übersiedlung nach Pacific Palisades, Kalifornien, gemeinsam mit Zipper Mitarbeit an kunstpädagogischen Projekten, u. a. in der Lehrerausbildung. Starb 1976 in Los Angeles.

Trudl Dubsky Zipper: 1913-1976

Trudl Dubsky Zipper was an innovative dancer, choreographer and teacher. Born in Vienna, she trained and performed with the Bodenwieser School and was renowned for her dynamic modern dancing and high leaps.

She co-founded the Rutherston-Dubsky School in London and later performed and taught in the Philippines. Trudl was also an accomplished visual artist and her paintings of Manila during the Japanese occupation were published in Life Magazine.

Trudl continued as a teacher and choreography throughout her life, including at the Chicago Conservatory of Music, and later at the University of Southern California. The Colburn Dance Institute was renamed the Trudl Zipper Dance Institute in 2008 to honor this extraordinary woman.
