Auckland Star, Volume LXIX, Issue 100, 30 April 1938, Page 14 PA IN MOURNING. DEATH OF LEADER. LARGE TANGI BEGINS. SON OF THIRD MAORI KING. (By Telegraph— Own Correspondent.) HAMILTON, this day, The largest tangi since the death of the late Maori King, Te Rata Mahuta, is in progress at Ngaruawahia pa. The death occurred yesterday of Tumati Mahuta te Wherowhero, second son of the third Maori King and eldest uncle of Koroki, the present King and paramount chief of the Waikatos. He was 48 years of age. During the latter part of his life, Tumati exercised a considerable influence among the Waikatos and took a prominent part in negotiating for the return of confiscated native land in the district. The Governor-General, Lord Galway and the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage, have been invited to attend the tangi. The Minister of Lands and acting-Minister of Native Affairs, the Hon. F. Langstone, is expected this afternoon. Next week Maoris from surrounding districts, chiefly Kawhia and the King Country, will arrive at Ngaruawahia to pay tribute. To-morrow week, when the tangi concludes. Tumati's remains will be removed to his family burial ground on Taupiri Mountain.
