About Tunstall Quarles

Biography
Tunstall was born on 11 May 1781[1] in King William County, Virginia.[2] He was the son of Tunstall Quarles and Susannah Edwards.[3] He was baptized on 26 August 1781.[4] He moved to Woodford County, Kentucky with his parents about 1790.[5]

He married Permelia Stringer on 22 June 1809 in Pulaski County, Kentucky.[6]

He was a member of the Kentucky State House of Representatives in 1796, 1811, and 1812.[7] He was captain of the 2nd Regiment Kentucky Volunteer Militia, which he armed and equipped at his own expense.[8][9] The regiment constructed Fort Jennings in Ohio, and then remained there on garrison duty for several months.[10] They then headed north to Put-in-Bay, Ohio.[11] When their term of service was nearly over, they went to Cincinnati, Ohio and were discharged in March 1813.[12]

He served in the Fifteenth and Sixteenth U.S. Congresses as a Republican from 4 March 1817 to 15 June 1820.[13]

He served as receiver of public moneys for the Cape Girardeau land district from May 1821 to July 1824.[14]

He was a member and speaker of the Kentucky State House of Representatives in 1828.[15] He was a member of the Kentucky State Senate in 1840.[16][17]

He died on 7 January 1855 in Somerset, Pulaski, Kentucky[18] and was buried in Sinking Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Somerset, Pulaski, Kentucky.[19]
