Pappy came from a town named Padua in Italy, his mother was Austrian. He said he'd only been in the army for 2 weeks before he was captured. He was a chef / cook. He was "held" at the Zonderwater camp - http://samilitaryhistory.org/vol011jb.html. He had worked on farms and had become a good wine maker. A man named Ugo Paccini (not sure of the spelling) gathered several POWs and gave them work at a winery - it was the deciduous fruit board. Also he'd been part of the crew that built the "St Josephs' Cottage Hospital" - now known as Vincent Palotti - where Chloe Minshall had her op.
He met Gertrude Petterson while she was working at a cafe.
Umberto became a South African citizen.
