Uriah was educated at Gilmanton Academy and entered the ministry of the Free-Will Baptist church. He was licensed to preach by the New Durham quarterly meeting held in May of 1843. He was a powerful preacher and orator. He also had poetical works published under the Nom de Plume of William Canterbury.
