Valencia Farmer (1985 - 1999)
Brief overview:
Valencia (14), was brutally gang raped, stabbed over 50 times, and her throat slit, in Eerste Rivier, Western Cape on 26th June 1999. She was lured into an abandoned house by six males, of whom all were arrested, but ultimately only three were prosecuted and sentenced. Valencia died at the Tygerberg Hospital, but she managed to tell them who her attackers were.
In December 2015, sixteen years after Valencia's rape and murder, the fourth and final suspect, Elmario Maasdorp then 36, appeared in the Blue Down Regional court, intending to plead guilty on both charges. Six males were initially arrested, including Maasdorp who was 21-years-old at the time. Glenville Faro and Franklyn Roberts were sentenced to two life sentences, and Russel van Wyk,16 at the time of sentencing, was given 23 years behind bars.
At the end of January 2017, Russel van Wyk (now 32), who was being held at the Drakenstein medium security correctional centre, was granted parole.
This news was distressing for Sylvia Farmer, Valencia's mother, expressed her how she felt, “He killed and raped a child. Why must he get parole? He must serve his whole sentence and he should have spent all those years in jail. You cannot forget something like that. Every time something like what happened to Anene Booysen happens it brings it all back. It also affects me a lot because I know what it is like. I know the trauma they went through.”
Sylvia said she had never seen remorse from the men and it was very hard for her to move past what happened as Valencia was her only child at the time. “She could have gone far in life, there were many things she wanted to do. She thought of becoming a lawyer or a teacher.”
