He was the son of Valentine Wightman and Rebecca Jamain. He married in North Kingstown, about 1769, Barbary Olin. Valentine (Capt.) was a master mariner, engaged in coast-wise trade out from Wickford, North Kingstown. During the War for Independence he commanded a privateer, "Lady Washington" commissioned August 24, 1776.
Valentine and Barbary had 13 children: William, John, Gideon, Phebe, Giles, Gideon, John, Phebe, Benjamin, Susan, Giles, Peleg and Henry.
