About Valerie (Tamar) Politzer
Alan Politzer was born Aladar Politzer in what is now Bratislava, Slovakia (when it was still in the Austro-Hungarian empire). He went to medical school in Prague, Czechoslovakia, and became a physician. In Prague he met his wife Valerie Politzer (born Tamar Diamant) who was in medical school. In the lead-up to the war they fled to England, where Alan worked in a military hospital, and where their older son Peter Politzer was born. After the war they emigrated to New York City, where Alan started a private medical practice. Initially Valerie worked as a seamstress before administering Alan's practice. In New York they had their younger son, H. David Politzer. Alan's father Moritz Politzer left his family when Alan was young, so not much is known about him. Alan's mother and and brother Hugo were killed by Nazis and only his brother Coloman survived the war, emigrating to Chile, where he had two children (Pedro Politzer and Patricia Politzer). Valerie's father and one of her sisters were also killed by the Nazis, while her mother and younger sister Edit (now Rachel Gad) survived the war, emigrating to Israel.
