About Vance Errol Shipman

Vance E. Shipman, 52, 1360 89th Ave. N., St. Petersburg, Fla., died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at his home in Florida.

    Memorial services were held Saturday, March 11, 2000, at Wesley United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bill Poland officiating. Inurnment followed in Memorial Park Cemetery.
    Those planning an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to Hospice of Florida Sun Coast, 300 East Bay Drive, Largo, FL 33770, in Vance’s name.
    Vance was born July 29, 1947, the son of Carroll and Gladys (Johnson) Shipman in Mason City, Iowa. While attending high school, Vance was active in sports, especially wrestling, in which he advanced to the Iowa State Wrestling Tournament as a senior. He graduated from Mason City High School in the class of 1965. Following high school, Vance attended Drake University, graduating in 1969.
    On April 18, 1992, Vance was united in marriage to Jeanie Nystrom at the SurfBall Room in Clear Lake, Iowa.
    Vance was a human resources director for several different companies, including Myrtle Werth Hospital (Memorial), Menomonie; ITT Life Insurance, Eau Claire; and Ellerbe Beckett Inc., Minneapolis, Minn. In 1992, Vance moved to Florida where he was employed by Precision Systems Inc., a division of Qwest Communications, St. Petersburg.
    Vance enjoyed hunting pheasants and going on fishing trips to Canada. He always said, “You only have a finite number of fishing trips.” Vance took great pleasures in sailing, summers in Clear Lake, Iowa, and sunsets on the Gulf. He was a member of Winslow Lewis Lodge 125 of Osseo, Minn., the Scottish Rite, and the Zurah Shrine.
    Those thankful for having shared in Vance’s life include his wife Jeanie of St. Petersburg; one son, Carrol E. Shipman III, and his wife Lori of Philadephia, Pa.; one stepdaughter, Angela Smith of Miami, Fla., two stepsons, Scott Smith, and his wife Jill of Indianapolis, Ind., and Brad Smith and his wife Leslie of Clearwater, Fla; mother, Gladys Shipman of Mason City; one sister, Shirley Olson, and her husband Roger of Pella, Iowa; one brother, Scott Shipman, and his wife Teri of Mason City; three grandchildren, Cole, Nick and Jacob; and many nieces and nephews.
    Mr. Shipman was preceded in death by his grandparents; father Carroll in 1997; and one brother, Carroll Shipman II.
    Fullerton Funeral Home in Mason City was in charge of arrangements.
