About Vasily Yakovlevich Sontsov

On December 8, 1859, the widow of the captain Vasili Yakovlevich Sontsov applied to Kherson Noble Assembly with petition for receiving certificate about nobility of one from their sons Dmitry. This was caused with necessity of its providing to his place of service in the Corps of Navy Navigators. In petition, she states that her husband, captain of the Corps of Navy Artillery Vasili Yakovlevich Sontsov died at time of his service on June 29, 1848. He was the son of junior officer and received nobility according to his own merits. After his death, six children lived with her. Sons: Konstantin, Pavel, Dmitry, Mitrofan; daughters: Raisa and Anna. To the time of making petition in 1859, three first sons were on service, the 4th was receiving education in the Black Sea navigation company. The daughters resided at her. She provided service record of Vasili Yakovlevich and birth certificate of Dmitry, mentioning that the certificates of other children will be provided later. (A file of such a later case with their documents is missing in RGIA). Place of her residing: own house in the city of Nikolayev. From the service record of the captain of 6th arsenal company of the Corps of Navy Artillery Vasili Yakovlevich Sontsov compiled in the year 1848. (Pages 7- 10): Age: 40 years old (so, he was born about 1808). Origin: from the family of junior officer. Has no inherited real estate property. Owns acquired wooden house in the city of Nikolayev. Wife: Alexandra, daughter of deceased cupor workman [a profession engaged in shipbuilding] of the 13th rank Zakhar Dmitriev. She has no inherited nor acquired real estate property.

Vasily started service on September 29, 1819. Promotions:
- Gunner of 2nd rank - March 10, 1820;
- Junior unter-officer - October 16, 1821;
- Cadet - December 10, 1828;
- Senior-cadet - March 27, 1829;
- Constable (old junior officer’s rank) – February 18, 1831;
- Ensign – December 31, 1832 (after disbandment of Corps of navy Artillery);
- Second lieutenant – November 21, 1834;
- Lieutenant – March 26, 1839;
- Staff-captain – April 11, 1848
- Last rank – captain.
He participated in many navy actions, all of navigations are listed in the document.
Awards:
- Silver medal on St. George ribbon in memory of the Turkish war of the years 1828-1829;
- For his jealous service was Highest granted the yearly salary – September 23, 1837;
- Highest granted the sign of 15 years irreproachable service – August 22, 1845.
- Highest granted a half-year salary for his jealous service – January 23, 1846.
On April 16, 1848 he was sent from Nikolayev to Moscow for taking gun-powder from the Moscow artillery garrison for the Black-Sea Fleet. While going back from there, he was infected with cholera and died at the settlement Sofievka of Verkhnedneprovsk district, Ekaterinoslav province on June 29, 1848.
