About Vera Ethel Markley

Vera E Markley, age 89, of Valparaiso, a volunteer honored for her work at Porter Memorial Hospital and the Pines Village Residences for Seniors, died Monday, Sept 17, 2001 at Whispering Pines Health Care Center. With her husband, Everett, who died in 1992, she was one of the first residents of Pines Village when it opened in 1983. They moved here rom East Chicago, where they had been longtime residents.

Mrs Markley worked at Inland Steel and later for many years as a salesperson in the ladies clothing department at the former Lewin's Department Store in East Chicago. In 1997, Mrs Markley was honored for 2,000 hours of service as a volunteer at Porter Memorial. She was a founder of the LeCard Shoppe at Pines Village and volunteer at the resale shop at her church, First United Methodist Valparaiso. She was also recognized in 1996 for her service to the Porter County Cancer Society. In March, she marked 50 years as a member of the Order of Eastern Star. At her death, she was a member of the Indiana Harbor Chapter, Highland.

She was born April 18, 1912 in Schaffer, W VA, the daughter of Lawrence Henry Means and Olive Belle Nethkin Means.

She was one of 11 children, nine daughters and 2 sons.

She is survived by 5 sisters:
Hazel Kincell, Fairmont, W VA; Mabel Shawver and Betty Constable, DeLand, FL; Geraldine DeMoss and Jean Alberico of Kingwood, W VA.
7 nieces and 7 nephews.
Her great niece, Carol M Bosley, a former resident of Valparaiso, lives in Bethesda, MD.

She was predeceased by sisters, Beatrice McDaniel; Daisy Lambert and Mary Emerson and brothers, Lawrence E and Frank E Means.

Burial in Calumet Park Cemetery.
