Vern Douglas Vernon, 74, died Wednesday evening February 26, 1986 at Ft. Meade V.A. Hospital following a lengthy illness.
He was born March 13, 1911 at Gatesville, Texas, the son of Walter Douglas and Anna Laura (Bennett) Vernon.
He grew up in the Rule, Texas area. As a young man he worked as a traveling salesman and also served in the US Army during World War II.
On June 13, 1943, he was married to Betty Stumpf in Clarksville, Tennessee.
He trained as a gunsmith in Denver, Colorado. For 20 years, he owned and operated Vernon's Gun Shop, the Trading Post and the Sioux National Historical Museum in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. In 1967, he moved to Custer, South Dakota where he owned and operated two stores called The Trading Post. He retired in 1980 and moved to Spearfish, South Dakota.
Survivors include his wife, Betty; a daughter and son-in-law, Bernice and Jerry Krambeck and six grandchildren, all of Spearfish, South Dakota and numerous nieces and nephews including Carol and Paul Iseminger of Rapid City, South Dakota.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Ollie Vernon.
