Vernon Melton Whetzel, 84, of Petersburg, W.Va., died Monday, Oct. 15, 2007, at the VA Medical Center in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Mr. Whetzel was born June 16, 1923, in Pendleton County, W.Va., and was a son of the late Albert Melton Whetzel and Martha Jane Alt Whetzel.

He was a truck driver for Burlee Moving and Storage in Columbus, Ohio, and served in the Navy during World War II.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lula (Cobb) Whetzel.

Survivors include his wife, Carol Curtis Whetzel; two sons, Larry Melton Whetzel of Manassas, and James Michael Whetzel of Marysville, Ohio; a daughter, Charlotte Ann Watson of Baltimore, Md.; four sisters, Ruth A. Engle of Purgitsville, Anna M. Bennett of Moorefield, W.Va., Clara Nell Ours of Cabins, W.Va., and Cloda Bell Kisamore of Arthur, W.Va.; a brother, Albert Junior Whetzel of Arthur, W.Va.; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren;

The Rev. Joseph Eversole will conduct the funeral 1 p.m. Friday at the Schaeffer Funeral Home in Petersburg, W.Va. Burial will be at Cherry Hill Cemetery in Upper Tract, W.Va., with military honors by the Petersburg VFW Post 6454 and the JROTC.

Visitation will be from 7 to 9 this evening at the funeral home.
