In his early life, my grandfather Ernest worked on oil rigs as a roughneck and in various jobs in oilfields in Wharton and Matagorda Counties, Texas. In 1924, he moved his wife, Minnie Camilla Brown Abbott and sons Marvin Brown and Charles Ray to the small developing town of Pasadena, Texas. He began work at the Sinclair Oil Refinery while being involved in the growth of his new community. He served on numerous town commitees and was very active in his church. He was a Deacon at Second Baptist Church in Pasadena. Upon retirement from Sinclair in 1946 he was approached by the Pasadena School District and became the first school crossing guard at Kruse Elementary School. Every child in the school knew "Old Man Abbott". He lived the rest of his life in Pasadena and was well known around town. He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Charles Ray in 1939. He passed away at M. D. Anderson Hospital in 1966 from complications with his heart and cancer.
