THE DOMESDAY BOOK

  • Listed under the land of the King's servants at Barford St. Martin, the Domesday Book records that John the doorkeeper1 held half a hide2 in Barford St. Martin. In the time of Edward the Confessor, this property had previously belonged to Ælfric3. The land rated a plough with a bordar and a slave and 8 acres of meadow; all valued at 10 shillings.
  • Wado also held one hide at Barford St. Martin, which he had had since before the Conquest; there was sufficient land for a plough, one bordar and 6 acres of meadow worth 15 shillings.
  • Berengar Giffard was a wealthy man4 who held one hide in Barford St. Martin, previously belonging to Earl Harold5. There was land for a plough, 6 bordars and 6 acres of meadow valued at 20 shillings (although it had been worth 3 times as much in King Edward's day6). * Waleran the Huntsman held a considerable amount of property (7 below) which included half a hide at Barford St. Martin that was let to Engenold; and previously in Edward the Confessor's time, held by Bolla. There was land for half a plough, 2 bordars and 3 acres of meadow all valued at 7 shillings.
  • The King's foresters held 1.5 hides in the forest of Grovely worth 30 shillings.
