About Walter Frank Eggert

Passed away peacefully at his home in Penngrove on August 29, 2010 surrounded by his loving family. Walt was born on October 14, 1924 in Chicago, Illinois where he attended Kelly High School. Upon graduation from high school in 1943, he enlisted in the armed forces and was sent overseas, first to England and then to Holland where he became a member of the legendary E (Easy) Company of the 101st Airborne (the subject of the "Band of Brothers" movie). Walt earned a purple heart while helping to make history during the famous Battle of the Bulge in Bastogne. He was wounded on Christmas Day, 1944. After his marriage in Chicago in 1947, Walt and his wife, Anneliese, moved to Petaluma, where he became a plumber. When his three children became involved in competitive swimming, he generously volunteered his time as a coach and also officiated at local, national and international swim meets for 42 years. His strong yet gentle nature made him a great motivator of swimmers of all ages. Walt left a lasting and positive impression not only on the swimmers he coached, but also on the many people whose lives he touched over the years. Walt is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, his daughter Dawn Eggert of Weaverville, CA, daughter Patrice and her husband David Harts of Santa Rosa, son Wayne Eggert and his wife Mary Pat Leoni of San Rafael, CA; and his dear sister Phoebe and her husband Don Caldwell of Arlington Heights, IL. He also dearly loved his ten grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He was the supportive strength of his family and will lovingly remain in their hearts always. A celebration of his life will be held on Sunday, September 5, 2010, at 2:00 p.m. at the PARENT-SORENSEN MORTUARY & CREMATORY, Petaluma, CA. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to the charity of your choice.
