He married Edith, daughter of Professor Henry Hugh Eames. (See the family of Eames). A family gathering for Harriet Ann, "The Mother" was held at his house-10, Hi1lmorton Road Rugby. This is described at length. ( See Easter 1905 ). He retired to 4, Norham Gardens, Oxford. He devoted his retirement to building the Memorial Chapel at Rugby School to commemorate the 682 Old Rugbeians that died in the war. (See Book).

It is said that his nickname at Rugby was "Spitter".
