Walter de Clifford, 2nd Baron Clifford

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Walter II de Clifford (c. 1160 - 17 January 1221) was a Welsh Marcher Lord and High Sheriff in England.

Walter became Sheriff of Herefordshire and was a close associate of William de Braose. In March 1208 he held back from William's rebellion, but did not do enough to check it. As a result King John dismissed him from his Marcher barony of Clifford and made his son Walter III de Clifford de facto lord instead.

Walter had married Agnes Cundy of Kent before 1175. He was succeeded by his sons, Walter III de Clifford and Roger Clifford who founded the line of Northumbrian Cliffords.

    Walter, 2nd Lord Clifford was born circa 1140 at Clifford Castle, Herefordshire, England. He was the son of Walter, 1st Lord Clifford and Margaret de Tosny. Walter, 2nd Lord Clifford married Agnes de Cundi, daughter of Lord of Coventry Roger de Cundi and Alice de Cheney, circa 1163.1 2nd Lord Clifford at Herefordshire, England, between 1190 and 1223. Walter, 2nd Lord Clifford died in 1222/23 at 7 Henry III.1

    Walter de Clifford was born circa 1150 at Clifford Castle, Herefordshire, England.3 He was the son of Walter fitz Richard fitz Pons and Margaret de Toeni.2 He married Agnes de Cuni, daughter of Roger de Cuni and Alice de Cheney, in 1185 at Cavenby, Lincolnshire, England.3 He died on 22 January 1222.3

    Walter de Clifford held the office of Sheriff of Herefordshire.4
