About Wandile Bozwana

Wandile Bozwana (1972 - 2015)

Wandile (43), a billionaire and business mogul, was shot in a hit, sustaining nine gunshot wounds to his back and lower body, on 2nd October 2015, at the Garsfontein N1 off-ramp, Pretoria, by an unidentified shooter. He was in the passenger seat of a Renault Clio. The driver, his partner Mpho Baloyi, was shot twice in her waist, but she managed to drive to a safe place and call emergency services. Wandile, who was also chairperson of the North West Business Forum, died in hospital.

Sipho Patrick Hudla (34), Matamela Robert Mutapa (4), Vusi Reginald Mathibela (30) and Bonginkosi Paul Khumalo (36) were arrested and charged with murder, attempted murder, illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. All four pleaded not guilty.

This case resulted in being a 'trial within a trial.

The Minister of Transport Fikile Mbalula was a person of interest in the case.

"Major-General Vincent Leshabane, revealed in an affidavit that the Minister of Transport Fikile Mbalula had contacted him in 2015, and promised to hand over Mathibela after a warrant for his arrest was issued. This was never fulfilled, and Mathibela was arrested after handing himself in at the Brooklyn police station, following damning CCTV footage that positively identified him. Mbalula did confirm that he had been interviewed by law enforcement, and that he was aware of allegations against him. However, he, like Premier Supra Mahumapelo, dismissed allegations as nothing more than an attempt at a smear campaign. Mbalula also denied promising Leshabane to hand over Mathibela, and affirmed his statement that he was not involved in the murder."

Wandile Bozwana was at the time in a legal battle with the North West province regarding allocation of tenders. It is believed by some people that his murder was to silence him due to his outspoken criticism of alleged corruption, which included that of Premier Mahumapelo.
