Truth Sun 14 Jun 1953 Page 7 WIDOW'S STORY OF ATTACK

ATTACK ON WOMAN
(Continued from Page 7.)

Det. Chalmers said that at the C.I.B. next day, Sutton refused a line-up parade saying 'Let them look at me'
here. If they say I'm the man then I must be. Det. Chalmers said that when the woman identified Sutton as her
attacker that day, Sutton said to her 'I'm sorry for what I did.- I apologise. I don't know, what came over me.'
He said the woman answered: 'But why did you do it to me? Sutton allegedly replied. 'Because you were the first woman I saw.' Martin Toolis, of Collingwood-street, told the Court he saw a man stooping over a woman on the footpath 15 yards from his house. Daphne Welfare Burden, of Langley-Ave., Wilston, a partner in a Latrobe street store with Mervyn Joseph Larfield said she identified Sutton as the man who came into the store for a soft drink on the night of the attack. She said he appeared to be puffing and when she handed him his change he held on to her wrist. Arthur Basuford, taxi driver, of Collingwood street, said a woman jumped into his cab in a near hysterical condition and asked to be driven home. Kevin William Hale, tram conductor of Woodland-ave., Ashgrove, said he sold Sutton a 7d. ticket for Bardon at about 8 o'clock on May 19. He said Sutton got onthe tram at Adelaide street and sat next to a woman and spoke to her. After further evidence
Sutton was committed for trial at the next sittings of the Criminal Court.

McDougall, Will Kemp, Mervyn Larfield, Kevin Doyle, and Charles Munro.
