12/293, Major, 2nd Battalion, Auckland Regiment
As Captain he was second-in-command of 6th (Hauraki) Company of the original Auckland Infantry Battalion. Took command of the Company when Major Stuckey died of wounds at the Gallipoli landing, 25 April 1915.
CITATION
- Distinguished Service Order
- For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When the advance of the battalion of which he was in command was held up by an intense fire of artillery and machine-guns, he went forward to the front line, and by skilful leadership pushed on the attack. While doing so he was wounded. During the work of consolidation he repelled three determined counter attacks. Throughout the operations his courage and ability inspired the greatest confidence in his men
