About Wilhelm Von Bamburg, Bishop Of Bamberg

Bishop William was Bishop of Strasbourg from c.1028 until his death 7 November 1046 or 1047 while on a diplomatic mission to Constantinople. Wikipedia says his tenure was uneventful. His older sibling was Pope Gregory V who died long before William was ordained. Strasbourg was one of the wealthiest German episcopal sees. In 1015, bishop Werner von Habsburg laid the first stone of a new cathedral of Romanesqe style on the ruins of a Carolingian basilica in Strasbourg. Presumably +Wilhelm enjoyed this sacred place during his tenure as bishop. Unfortunately, with significant wood in its structure, this cathedral burned in 1196. Shortly afterwards, construction on the replacement Strasbourg cathedral began. It eventually took gothic inspiration from Chartres as Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Strasbourg At 142 metres (466 feet), it was the world's tallest building for 227 years from 1647 to 1874 .
