He was the postmaster in Manchac, which was named (Akers) after him.
28 Jan 1938; p. 5, col. 1: William Witte Akers, 77, died in Ponchatoula
[on or before Jan 24th]. Born 10 Mar 1860, son of the late T. M. Akers
and Mrs. Minerva Tucker; married 19 Sep 1889 Miss Irene Ingraham; no
children, but following the death of Mrs. Jerome Tucker, took her daughter,
Doris, to rear. Mrs. Akers died 9 Mar 1935. He is survived by one sister,
Mrs. Alice Wright of Ponchatoula and several nieces and nephews. Funeral
was Monday; interment in Sandhill Cemetery.
Ronnie’s note: William Witte Akers was Grandmother Wright’s brother. He
was postmaster at Manchac, which was named after him, I’ve been told.
Maybe Uncle Bill and Aunt Witte were both named after him, although
Grandpaw Wright’s name was also William.
